Cinema and Audiences Research Project
Project details
The Cinema and Audiences Research Project (CAARP) database is an online encyclopaedia of cinemagoing in Australia and aims to promote research into, and a deeper appreciation of, the history of film exhibition and cinemagoing in Australia.
CAARP holds information about film showtimes, capturing where and when individual screenings took place. In this way the relationship between film distribution, exhibition venues and cinema going in different periods and locales can be traced. The unique structure of the database allows for historical changes to be recorded and viewed from within a single screen.
This site contains information on 331726 screenings, 11041 films, 2020 cinemas, and 1894 postcodes, from 17 May 1846 to the present day. It holds particularly detailed coverage of the Greek and Italian cinema circuits that flourished in Australia during the post-war period.
