The Kinomatics Australian Film Production Dataset
Project details
The Kinomatics Australian Film Production Dataset (KAFPD) is a large, curated dataset containing 50 years of data on Australian live action feature films and the people that filled ten key production roles on those films.
We spent multiple years assembling this dataset from various useful but incomplete public sources of information on Australian cinema – a process we’ve described in detail in both the data paper and public data repository linked to on this page. We continue to maintain and improve the dataset as we and others use it in our work.
The dataset is the basis for a number of academic research projects, serves as the underlying data for our interactive web app KAFFE, and enables us to explore all kinds of interesting questions about Australian cinema history. As the dataset is published open access, it’s free for others to use in their own investigations too.
Key Facts
1975-2024
The KAFPD covers the 50 year period from 1975, a year widely considered as a landmark in Australian cinema.

The KAFPD only includes live-action feature films - that means no documentaries, animations or short films (see the technical documentation for some exceptions).
10 key production roles
For each film in the KAFPD, we track the people that filled the following ten production roles: Cinematographer, Composer, Costume Designer, Director, Editor, Executive Producer, Producer, Production Designer, Sound Designer, Writer.
