Kinomatics Global Showtimes
Project details
Since 2012, Kinomatics has collected records of film screenings (showtimes) from around the world.
This unique dataset describes all movie showtimes and cinema locations for all films released in the majority of global cinema markets. In particular, we collected data over two key periods marked by dramatic industrial upheavals in the distribution and exhibition of films.
Baseline data was collected between 2012 and 2015 during the global industry’s mass digitisation. This comprises almost 18 million datapoints.
More recently we collected data between November 2019 and June 2021 inclusively. This period is particularly interesting because it just precedes and then covers the onset and diffusion of COVID-19 around the world. This data includes approximately 4,890 time-stamped XML files, with an average of 3,860 datapoints in each file—around 19 million datapoints in total.
In order to understand resilience and failure in the industry during the post-Covid recovery period we also collected data between December 2023 and March 2024.
