Streaming Wars: Exclusive content and platform competition in Latin America

The competition is extremely tight for online platforms, which forces them to differentiate themselves. One way to achieve this is by offering exclusive content, some of which the platforms even produce themselves. This approach to platform competition, however, can have disadvantages for consumers and for the industry as a whole.

Kinomatics researchers contribute to the new Creative Economy Note by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on the competition for subscribers by streaming platforms. This research uses rich data on audiovisual content to shed light on the potential drawbacks from insufficient platform competition and evaluate the copyright and antitrust policies that can help remedy this.
